Conferences/Meetings

PRIMER IN PEDIATRIC NEUROSURGERY - COMMON DIAGNOSES: AN OVERVIEW FOR THE PROVIDER
August 5 - 7, 2010 • Dallas, TX

Our inaugural conference mission is to provide neonatal, pediatric and family providers current clinical information in the field of pediatric neurosurgery.

During our conference, we will focus on concussions and other sports injuries related to pediatric neurosurgery, as this is an issue in the national forefront. This session will work to inform coaches, trainers, and school nurses, while the emergency room and trauma providers will learn the important parts of workup and treatment from the neurosurgeon's perspective.

The main two day conference will highlight common neurosurgical diagnoses, their presentation, workup, treatment and follow up specific to pediatric neurosurgery. The general, emergency and intensivist provider will be provided knowledge in each of these diagnoses as it pertains to their field of practice.

The conference will also be geared to residents, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, other allied health professionals, nurses and students. Whether you are in private practice, school based clinics, hospitals or triage centers, this information will only help you to better understand, identify and appropriately refer the pediatric neurosurgical patient.

Pre-Conference: Children's Medical Center designates this educational activity for a maximum of 5.25 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

HUMAN NATURE & EARLY EXPERIENCE:  ADDRESSING THE 'ENVIRONMENT OF EVOLUTIONARY ADAPTEDNESS'
October 10 - 12, 2010 • Notre Dame, Indiana

The University of Notre Dame’s Department of Psychology and Center for Children and Families invites you to a multidisciplinary symposium entitled “Human Nature and Early Experience: Addressing the ‘Environment of Evolutionary Adaptedness’” October 10-12, 2010. This symposium brings together an international audience interested in innovative approaches to human development, children, families, parenting, and human evolution. Speakers will present their research on the relationship between caregiving practices and outcomes. See the schedule and speaker list below. Please share this information with your colleagues.

RATIONALE: It is becoming increasingly clear that the ways we are rearing our children today are not the ways humans are designed to thrive. The ill effects of these missing ancestral practices are becoming evident as children’s well being in the USA is worse than 50 years ago (Heckman, 2008) and is among the worst in the industrialized world (20th in family and peer relationships and 21st in health and safety; UNICEF, 2007). We have epidemics of ADHD, anxiety and depression among the young, and, indeed, all age groups (USDHHS, 1999). Too many children are arriving at school with poor social skills, poor emotion regulation, and habits that do not promote prosocial behaviors. Rates of young children whose behavior displays aggression, delinquency, or hyperactivity are estimated to be as high as 25% (Raver, & Knitze, 2002). The expulsion rate of prekindergarten children (Gilliam, 2005) and the number of children under age 5 with psychosocial problems (Powell et al., 2003) or on psychotropic medications have increased dramatically in recent years (Zito et al., 2000).

Mammals require nurturing care-giving for optimal post-natal development. Animal, human psychological and anthropological research provide converging evidence for the importance of conditions related to the "environment of evolutionary adaptedness" (EEA; Bowlby, 1951) for optimal brain and body system development in human beings. At the same time, epigenomic studies are beginning to better demonstrate the influence of caregiver behavior on offspring. Despite the growing evidence for the effects of particular childrearing practices on brain development, scientific theory and policy recommendations do not match up with the findings.

HOST: This symposium is being sponsored by Notre Dame’s Center for Children and Families (CCF), the Collaborative for Ethical Education (CEE) and the Department of Psychology. The Center for Children and Families brings scholars together to conduct innovative, interdisciplinary research in support of healthy development across the human lifespan. The center encourages basic and translational research that can have a broad impact in three key areas: income and health disparities; developmental disabilities and psychopathology; and optimization of development, education, and learning.

GOALS: It is anticipated that the symposium will lead to new theory and research designed to shed light on which practices are most essential to child rearing and development. There is an increasing amount of converging evidence across animal, human psychological, neurobiological and anthropological research demonstrating the later vulnerability of brain and body systems among those with poor early care. Even when medicines are available to alleviate symptoms of dysfunction, the underlying suboptimal structures remain. Examining closely what types of care are essential for optimal development will inform not only scientific research and theory, but public policy and inform translational research.

NEONATAL UPDATE 2010
November 15 - 19, 2010 • London, United Kingdom

This annual 5-day international meeting was initiated over 20 years ago by Professor David Harvey, Emeritus Professor of Paediatrics, Imperial College London. It has grown to become one of the largest speciality meetings in neonatal medicine and now regularly attracts a capacity audience of around 250 senior clinicians from around the world. The meeting is a forum for the presentation of new research data and state-of-the-art clinical practice. The speakers are active researchers and internationally acknowledged experts. This is a meeting where basic science meets clinical expertise. There is ample time for discussion and these are usually spirited and lively.

A new feature this year is the offer of two awards for outstanding young investigators, giving them the opportunity to present a 20 minute résumé of their research achievements at the Neonatal Update 2010, and discuss the relevance of their past and future work to neonatal medicine.

This year’s thematic streams include infectious disease and immunisation, respiratory medicine (in collaboration with the European Paediatric Association - EPA/UNEPSA and the Cochrane Child Health Field) and neurological and neurodevelopmental paediatrics, as well as sessions devoted to adolescent medicine, nutrition and many other fields of interest.

Distinguished speakers from many countries will present plenary sessions and there will be parallel workshops, round table discussions and debates on controversial areas. Interactive case reports will involve the audience as will sessions on how to solve problems while seeing patients using immediate technology aids to discover the available evidence-base. Those with work in progress will be invited to book for a special ‘Meet the Editor’ session, while poster sessions will feature all accepted abstracts. The authors of those of highest quality will be offered an oral presentation and receive “Excellence in Paediatrics Awards”. Abstracts will be published as a supplement to the Journal Acta Paediatrica and should be submitted at www.excellence-in-paediatrics.org for consideration.

10th WORLD CONGRESS of PERINATAL MEDICINE
November 8-10, 2011 • Punta del Este, Uruguay

We are pleased to announce that Uruguay was designated to host the 10th WORLD CONGRESS of PERINATAL MEDICINE, to be held from November 8 to 11 in Punta del Este, Uruguay. The event is organized by the World Association of Perinatal Medicine, jointly with the Uruguayan Association of Perinatology, the Uruguayan Paediatric Society, the Uruguayan Society of Neonatology, the Society of Paediatric Intensive Care, the Uruguayan Society of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, the Society of Obstetrics & Gynaecology of the Interior and the Latin American Center of Perinaology.
